Materna Medical Inc. is an early-stage medical device company located in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
Materna’s initial concept emerged out of the Stanford University Biodesign program. The ultimate goal of the program is to harness technological innovation to improve the current standard of care and patient outcomes. Our CEO Mark Juravic and several bright colleagues were charged with inventing novel solutions to unmet clinical needs. The group chose to address injury caused by childbirth, a significant clinical need that affects mothers all around the world. After researching and assessing the need, they decided to pursue a device-based approach to maternal injury prevention and ultimately developed a patent pending technology to change the status quo for vaginal deliveries.
Along the way, Materna Medical realized the clinical need for patients with numerous unmet pelvic health conditions. Thus, a new vaginal dilator technology was created to treat women with such conditions. Materna Medical's pelvic health device will be available for commercial use online in early 2016.
Materna currently resides at the Fogarty Institute for Innovation, a medical technology incubator located in El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, CA.
Our birthing device, LUNAH, leverages basic technology to reduce the incidence of childbirth-related injures to women during vaginal delivery that have been traditionally accepted as inevitable. Every year, millions of women sustain visible tearing to their vaginas and perineum as well as serious internal damage to their pelvic muscles during childbirth. These injuries, which are particularly severe in first-time mothers, produce short-term and long-term consequences for a mother’s health. We hope that LUNAH will be integrated into the standard of care when preparing women for delivery and therefore allow mothers to more safely and comfortably cherish the first moments with their new baby.
Our pelvic health device, EVVA, is a new dilator technology to treat various pelvic health related conditions. Many women suffer from pelvic pain, yet it is common for these women to go undiagnosed for many years and tirelessly search for a way to understand and treat their condition. The frustration, pain, and belief there is no answer can be extremely debilitating for women. EVVA is a mechanical dilator that helps women gain back control of their pelvic health.
